Steel wire rope testing items and methods

According to the provisions of the standard GB/T 20118-2017 "General Technical Conditions for Steel Wire Ropes", steel wire rope testing items and methods are as follows:

1.Measurement of diameter and out-of-roundness

The diameter and out-of-roundness of the steel wire rope testing should be measured using a vernier caliper with a wide jaw, and the measurement should be carried out under tension-free conditions. On two sections adjacent to each other for at least 1m on a straight line 15m away from the end of the wire rope, take two values measured perpendicularly to each other on the same section, and the average of the four measurement results will be used as the actual measured diameter of the wire rope. The ratio of the maximum difference in diameter measured at the same section of the wire rope to the nominal diameter is called the out-of-roundness of the wire rope.

2.Measurement of length

The length of the steel wire rope testing shall be measured under no load conditions. Special requirements: The method of measuring the length of the wire rope should be agreed between the supplier and the buyer.

3.Surface quality

The surface quality of the wire rope and its strands is inspected by hand and visual inspection.

4.Measurement of weight

The total weight of the wire rope includes the weight of the wire rope, reel and packaging materials, and should be measured with a standard weighing instrument. When calculating the unit weight of the wire rope, divide the net weight of the wire rope by the actual measured length of the wire rope.

5.Inspection that the wire rope is not loose

Unravel the two symmetrical strands at one end of the wire rope, which are about two lay lengths long. When the two strands are reset, they should not unravel on their own.

6.Inspection of surface quality of wire rope

Surface quality of wire ropes and strands, verified by visual inspection. There should be no quality defects existing in the GB/T 21965 standard.
