Steel Wire Rope Sling: Everything You Need to Know
A typical steel wire rope sling consists of a wire rope made from small individual steel wires twisted together. Both ends of the wire rope are looped together individually to form a sling. The wire rope is the fundamental component of a sling. These slings come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and tensile strengths.
Wire rope slings come with a unique design consisting of multiple steel wires. These wires, however, stay in a spiral pattern around the steel or fibre core. It provides flexibility, strength, and the ability to handle any stress related to bending.
In every automobile construction, general manufacturing, and oil and gas industry, you will see the use of wire rope sling. These kinds of slings are also popular among the forging facilities and steel mills where the user puts to test the durability of the wire rope.
Constructions of Steel Wire Rope Sling
Steel wire rope slings are generally fabricated from 6 x 19 or 6 x 37 construction wire cable. The constructional numbers refer to the number of strands (6) that are helically wound around a core. The core supports the strands of the wire rope lifting sling and can either be an independent wire rope core (IWRC) or a fiber core (FC) made from hemp or sisal. Smaller diameter wire rope slings feature 6 strands with 19 wires in each strand. Larger diameter industrial lifting slings will generally feature 6 strands with 37 individual wires in each strand. The 6 x 37 construction is more flexible than the 6 x 19 construction, but not as abrasion resistant.
Wire cable lifting slings used by the crane, rigging and material handling industries are available in many different styles and constructions to meet your needs. The most popular wire lifting slings are Single Body slings featuring a 6 x 19 or 6 x 37 Construction, Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) Wire Rope with an Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC). These slings are sometimes referred to as wire chokers, Permaloc wire rope slings, wire cable slings, Flemish eye slings, single leg slings, eye and eye slings or eye & eye slings due to the loop or eye that is formed on each end of the wire sling.
Types of Steel Wire Rope Sling
Sling with soft eyes
It is a type of lifting sling made of wire rope that has been formed into loops, also known as soft eyes, at both ends of the sling. These loops provide a safe and secure way to attach the sling to a lifting hook or other lifting device.
Sling with round
It is a type of sling made from nylon or polyester webbing. They are typically more flexible and conform more easily to the load than other types of slings. This makes them less likely to damage the load or the sling itself.
Sling with soft eye two legs
It is a type of lifting sling that is made up of two legs that are connected to a central eye. The legs are made from high-quality wire rope designed to withstand the rigors of everyday use.
Sling for crane
It is a type of sling which is a removable accessory that enables a machine or device, such as a crane for example, to lift a load by linking the lifting device and the load to be lifted (object, vehicle, etc.). Sling with master link two legs
It is a type of polyester slings with 2 legs consist of one master link with two legs. The round slings or lifting slings that act as legs have a hook of your choice at each end. With the hooks of the polyester slings with 2 legs, the load can easily be picked up at two points.
Assembly sling with chain
Chain slings consist of a series of chain links, each connected to the other using different types of fittings, such as master links, clevis hooks, or grab hooks.
Single Part Wire Rope Sling
The eye for a single part wire rope sling is formed by looping the wire rope back on to the rope. The end of the rope is attached by a clamp or being woven by hand or mechanically into the rope body. Single part wire rope slings use a single wire rope to produce the sling.
Woven Eye Wire Rope Sling
For the woven eye version of a wire rope sling, the eye is formed by weaving the wire rope into itself after forming the loop. It is designed to reduce the chance of the sling catching or being hung up when lifting.
How to Use Steel Wire Rope Sling

Inspection of Steel Rope Slings
Selection of a sling to lift a load is based on selecting a sling with a Rated Capacity at least equal to the weight of the load. The sling must also be proper to allow the user to select a hitch that will conform to the shape of the load and keep it under control during the lift. The use of multiple leg slings is not recommended when the angle between any leg and the vertical is greater than 450. In any case when lifting headroom is restricted and a larger leg angle is necessary, care must be exercised in selecting a sling with a proper Rated Capacity at the leg angle which will be used. A visual inspection of the sling must be conducted before each lift to make sure the sling is in new or near new condition. A manufacturer’s Rated Capacity applies only to an undamaged sling.
Slings are exposed to many factors that will adversely affect their safety during their service life. For this reason, the slings should be checked as long as they are in use. Slings should be checked before each use to determine whether there is a physical deterioration. When any suspicions case of the sling determined, it should be taken out of service and checked. If the sling labels are illegible or lost, the slings should be taken out of service directly.
Before using, the slings must be checked by an expert person in the light of the following criteria and should be discarded when necessary.
- Illegible sling identification (such as slingshot identification and/or working load limit).
- Wear, deterioration and/or breakage of upper or lower end terminations and/or clamps.
- Detection of broken wires.
- Serious rope distortions such as wire extensions or protrusions.
- Significant rope wear.
- Heat damage.
