Keeping your wire rope slings in good shape helps them last longer and work safely. The main goals are to prevent rust, reduce wear, and avoid damage. Regular cleaning, proper lubrication, and careful storage make a big difference.
After each use, clean your sling with water to remove dirt and dust. Dry it with a clean cloth so no moisture remains. If there's grease or oil, use a mild soap to wipe it off, then rinse and dry. Avoid strong chemicals. In places like coastal or chemical zones, rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt or chemical residue.
Lubrication reduces friction inside the rope and protects it from rust. Apply lubricant after cleaning or before storage. If you use the sling often, lubricate it every month. Use a dedicated wire rope grease-ordinary oil doesn't stick well and washes off easily. Spread the lubricant evenly over the surface and work it into the strands so it reaches all areas.
Store slings in a dry, indoor place away from dampness and heat. Don't place them near doors, windows, or heating equipment. Coil slings neatly on a rack or hook-don't pile them up. Keep different types separate and label them for easy access. For zinc-coated or stainless steel slings, cover them with a cloth or plastic to avoid scratches. If stored long-term, inspect and relubricate every three months.
Check slings before each use. Look for broken wires, wear, or distortion. When cleaning, feel for bumps or rough spots. Do a full inspection every month and note how often the sling is used, its condition, and when it was last lubricated. Mark any slings that are near the end of their service life so you can replace them in time.
